At least as Mind-Blowing as Dinosaur Feathers

This is the coolest thing I've seen in a long time. One of my students sent me the link. Thanks, C.!

That is indeed a mind-blowing case. Thanks for the link.

Buuuutttt...I have a FTM-transitioned friend with an MD who had his ovaries removed because, he said, ovaries have a frequent tendency to turn cancerous when exposed to the high, frequent, regular doses of testosterone necessary to maintain a sex change. That's one reason they're often removed in the FTM transition process. Would like to know more about that - I certainly understand the desire to hold onto one's fertility, but ovarian cancer is a nasty disease to get. I haven't seen that discussed at all - just either freakouts over the whole gender-bending thing (sigh, eyeroll) or the exact opposite reaction. :)

(Note: I'm a liberal arts major with limited scientific knowledge. If there are any actual scientists/doctors around, would love to hear from you on the subject...)

Wow, that got me thinking.. Isn't it funny how things you never considered can cause this conservative first reactions and then you read on and realise this is aobut love and family and you can let go of the xenofobia. That is why for me reading about all sorts of stuff outside my immediate confortzone is so so important. It stops me from having such a reaction when I am actually talking to someone who lives it (Though I doubt I will meet a couple like this any time soon..)

It is interesting how this has played out on the local news. Pretty much a freak show kind of thing. One thing that made me laugh was when the news promo showed that exact picture and said, "Oregon man claims to be pregnant." As if he is lying? As if there really isn't a medically documented child in there? Funny.

I'm all, meh, hey cool. A family that has to explain more stuff than mine does! It makes logical sense to me. If your wife is infertile and you would need a surrogate and you have the ability to get pregnant...it only makes logical and practical sense. But people are shocked! Just shocked!

I think people really have problems when gender roles are switched around and more fluid than they are in most het relationships because it messes up that whole "woman as man's property" thing. Even if it is only at a subconscious level. Two women coming together as equals! A relationship where the burden of reproduction can be handled by the man! Well, how do they know who is supposed to be boss and who is supposed to be all oppressed? It might make it look like equal relationships not based on gender oppression can be done! How will we keep the upper hand! Society is ruined!

Ok, somebody stop me. But the whole line of argument about this just makes the (mostly) men who make it look like total asses to me. Very entertaining.
